Brain Injuries

A Serious Injury with a Long-Term Impact

Many of the cases that John Evans handles involve traumatic brain injuries (also called concussions by some doctors).

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can affect the way a person thinks, remembers, sees, moves, and expresses  emotion. It can cause balance or speaking problems. It can cause headaches, dizziness, memory issues, mood changes, and sensitivity to light or noise. Depending on the area of the brain that has been injured, many functions that a person could do without effort become difficult and draining.

Generally, a brain injured person needs evaluation by a neurologist, a neuropsychologist, and a neuroradiologist who specializes in brain injuries.

However, the typical emergency room doctor, often faced with many simultaneous emergencies, may not perform a full evaluation for a brain injury.  The typical primary care doctor, who has limited time to see patients, also may not initially recognize the signs of a brain injury, and may not refer the patient to the appropriate specialists for evaluation.

Some traumatic brain injuries may be immediately evident, showing bleeding on a CT scan or damage on a standard MRI.  Other brain injuries cannot be detected without state-of-the-art imaging, to identify microscopic damage that is hindering the function of the brain.  Sometimes specialists use targeted functional tests, and have an injured person try to perform specific tasks, to see whether there has been damage to a specific area of the brain.

The long term impact of brain injuries can be devastating, causing cognitive problems, depression, brain fog, and a reduced ability to maintain  employment.

When injured people have symptoms of a concussion  John Evans helps them identify the kinds of medical specialists they should see to evaluate whether or not a  traumatic brain injury has occurred, and, if so, what treatment and rehabilitative therapies the brain injured person should obtain.

If you have been in a car crash and are having symptoms of a brain injury, please call John Evans, Attorney at Law, at 480-573-0600 for a free consultation.
