Insurance Minimums
Insurance minimums are the minimum amounts of coverage that drivers are legally required to have in order to drive. The purpose of these minimums is to ensure that those who cause car accidents have some level of insurance, even if only minimal, to pay for any injuries and damages that they cause.
Arizona has had minimum auto insurance requirements since 1972.
Before 2020, Arizona’s insurance minimums were low in comparison to the expense that a serious car accident can cause. The old minimums were:
- $15,000 for bodily injuries per person
- $30,000 for bodily injuries per accident
- $10,000 for property damage
The New Minimums
Arizona recently increased the minimum insurance requirements to:
- $25,000 for bodily injuries per person
- $50,000 for bodily injuries per accident
- $15,000 for property damage
Although the minimum required coverages are increased, they are still not enough to cover the expense that a serious car accident can cause.
To protect yourself and your assets, it is a good idea to have insurance coverage that is more than the minimum requirements.
Most drivers who are trying to get good insurance protection get at least the following coverages:
- $100,000 for bodily injuries per person
- $300,000 for bodily injuries per accident
- $50,000 for property damage
It is possible to get higher coverages. It is also possible to get “umbrella coverage,” which increases the dollar limits on coverage for if there is a very serious car accident.
