In Arizona, the law requires that all drivers have the following minimum coverage for if they cause a car accident:
- $25,000 for bodily injuries per person
- $50,000 for bodily injuries per accident
- $15,000 for property damage
Many drivers on the road have only this minimum coverage. However, if they injure someone in a serious accident, their coverage may not be enough to cover even the injured person’s hospital bill, let alone extensive ongoing medical treatment after release from the hospital.
That is why careful planners should have Underinsured Motorist Coverage.
What is Underinsured Motorist Coverage?
Underinsured motorist coverage, often abbreviated as UIM, is insurance coverage that provides protection in cases where the at-fault driver’s insurance coverage is insufficient to cover your expenses. After the coverage of the at fault driver is used up, UIM coverage then applies to pay for expenses, including medical bills and lost wages.
How do I obtain Underinsured Motorist Coverage?
When you meet with an insurance agent, or when you purchase coverage online, you will be given the option to purchases UIM coverage. You will also have the option to reject it. Many drivers reject UIM coverage, not understanding what it is or why they need it.
UIM coverage generally does not add a large amount cost to an insurance policy. Considering that it can protect against severe financial consequences from the actions of a careless and irresponsible driver, it is a good idea to have UIM coverage on your auto insurance policy.
