In Arizona, the law requires that all drivers have the following minimum coverage for if they cause a car accident:
- $25,000 for bodily injuries per person
- $50,000 for bodily injuries per accident
- $15,000 for property damage
However, some drivers on the road flout the law and drive with no insurance. If they injure someone in a serious accident, they have no coverage for the injured person’s medical bills, lost income, and other damages.
That is why Uninsured Motorist Coverage is very important.
What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?
Uninsured motorist coverage, often abbreviated as UM, is insurance coverage that provides protection in cases where the at-fault driver has no insurance to cover your expenses.
How do I obtain Uninsured Motorist Coverage?
When you meet with an insurance agent, or when you purchase coverage online, you will be given the option to purchases UM coverage. You will also have the option to reject it. Many drivers reject UM coverage, not understanding what it is or why they need it.
UM coverage generally does not add a large amount cost to an insurance policy. Considering that it can protect against severe financial consequences from the actions of a careless and irresponsible uninsured driver, it is a good idea to have UM coverage on your auto insurance policy.
